Travis Nelson Ushers in New Era of Wartburg Basketball
After a coaching shake-up right before Memorial Day weekend, the Wartburg Central High School Bulldogs were met with their new Coach in Travis Nelson on May 28 - the first day of off-season practice. After only losing 1 senior, Nelson will have the majority of last year's team plus a large group of rising freshmen. All in all, there were 22 prospective players on the first day of practice. It remains to be seen how many of the 22 Nelson decides to keep. The greatest likelihood this writer has heard is that all 22 players will stick on the team - with a robust Junior Varsity team a great possibility for most of the incoming freshmen.
Nobody should be surprised by this move as Nelson is a former Wartburg Bulldog athlete and has an impressive coaching resume from within the Bulldogs' district. Former Head Coach Terry Coker has been a wonderful, steady presence in Wartburg for decades - and he stabilized a program that lost the formidable Joe Layne after his storied career in Wartburg. Coach Coker is a good man and deserves a hand clap for his many years serving the students and athletes of Wartburg. But as we clap for Coach Coker on his way out - we also applaud Coach Nelson as he ushers in a fresh future for the mighty Blue Bulldogs! Let's get behind these young men! Go Dogs!
Stay tuned for re-caps of future preseason action. Up first, after only 3 days of practice, the Bulldogs travel to Maryville on May 31st! Let's Go!
