Bulldogs Take 2 out of 3 on a cold night in Sunbright

On Veterans Day - Nov 11, 2025 - school was out due to winter weather conditions in Morgan County. The big question was whether or not 2 Morgan County schools would be able to play in the PM hours? Or if they would have to re-schedule this slate of games (again!) Thankfully, the call was made that any problematic backroads would clear up by gametime, and bing-bang-boom - we get to celebrate Veterans Day as a community while we watch our student athletes go to battle. Seriously though - Thank you to all the men and women that have ever donned a uniform to serve our great country and the freedoms we too-often take for granted.
Up first would be the Boys Junior Varsity. So far - they are off to a good start winning their only contest to date against Midway. With a large bench full of players to rotate - JV Coach Jonathan Dagley keeps everyone fresh with regular rotations. These reps are extra-valuable for these boys - and they all push to make the most of their time. Without official stats, I'm just going off the eye test. A player that stood out in the JV contest was AJ Snell. With good court vision, he jumped several pass routes - generating turnovers and breakaway scores. Dagley rotated everyone in on multiple occasions - and the JV boys took this one with ease 27-12.
Up next was the Varsity girls. The Wartburg Lady Dogs are 1-1 on the season with polar opposite performances. Against Oakdale, they couldn't miss and won big. Then against Midway - they were stymied by the aggressive Green Wave play. Which team would show up tonight? Held to only 3 points in the entire first quarter - it looked like the Ladies were going to continue struggling - but they fought hard and flipped the switch in the 4th - putting up 20 points in the 4th quarter alone! The Lady Dogs got back to their winning ways with a big win 36-22.
Last up for the night was the Boys Varsity. The boys have played some hard fought contests so far - but they came into this one undefeated so far in this young season. Both teams have a very full bench and plenty of athleticism to utilize. This was a fast-paced contest, by design, which had many athletes doubled over and breathing heavily by the end. Sunbright's Ty Walker could not miss - dropping 27 points on the Bulldogs - and leading his team to their 50-37 win over the Bulldogs. The boys drop to 2-1 and look to get back on track this Thursday against Norwood.

Below are a few thoughts meant to encourage some of our young athletes that went above and beyond at Sunbright:

New Leader in the Clubhouse

Picture
So far this season, the Lady Dogs have scored a total of 103 points... and 82 of those points have come at the hands of only 5 girls. The team lead is the Menace in the Paint - Ellie Ritter. She has been one of the top scorers in every game so far. Even with her efforts - no Lady Bulldog had scored in the double-digits this season... until now! Braylee "The Dagger" Dagley was coming into this third game with 8 total points on the season. She found her shot this game - scoring a single-season best for the Bulldogs with 12 - with 8 of those coming in the 4th quarter. Her 20 points puts her into the top spot among Lady Bulldogs on the season. Clutch play young lady!

Never Back Down!

Picture
What do you call an athlete that just won't back down? Some ball players avoid contact and try to run around everyone... Kamdyn Melton is not afraid to take the contact to the defenders when she has the ball in her hands - and her team needed her hard fought 9 points. "Killa" Kam got hot in the 4th quarter like the aforementioned Dagley - but she was consistent enough to score in 3 of the 4 quarters tonight. Killa Kam brings a swagger and confidence to the Bulldogs that says "We're here to play!"

Jaxon for Three!

Picture
Weird stat of the night... Jaxon Williams has scored in all three games this season. Tonight - he hit a three-pointer and made 1 free throw for a total of 4 points... That 1 free throw is the first "non-three-pointer" point he's scored this season! He has a three game streak of hitting a three pointer! Let's hope he keeps the hot hand against Norwood...

Waffle House

Picture
After saddling Kayman Fritts with the nickname "Waffle House" for scattering, covering, and smothering the opposition... his mom shows me this bad boy! Somebody clear it with Coach Byrd... Stat! I smell endorsement deals and NIL!

The Marvelous Mustache

Picture

While his 11 points on the season may not jump off the stat sheet yet - he has the ability to be a tone setter and his moves to get the ball up and down the court with slippery and deceptive speed are impressive. But the most impressive thing about Marshall Blalock may be his mustache! Blalock gets 3-4 points per game, and more points are going to come. You see, he is able to move at full speed, with full vision, and navigate pesky defenders along the way. The shots will drop eventually - because he's able to get into position to take good shots. With the pivotal Blalock finding his footing... let's do a vote for a fitting nickname... Cast your votes below:

That's it for this time! I hope you've enjoyed the DogBlitz... Now, Let's get ready for Norwood!

Go Dogs!
